Ben’s selection as the sole Australian in his age and weight category comes following a hugely successful campaign at the National Championships, held in Adelaide this past weekend. Ben won Bronze in both the U/70kg division and as part of the team in the Cadet Team event.
Fellow Karate athletes supported by WestVic; all via the Bacchus Marsh Grammar program; Max Noble and Joel Hennessy, also had successful Nationals campaigns. Max won the Silver medal in the U/70kg division, Bronze as part of the Cadet Team and a semi-final berth in the Open Weight division, while Joel was also part of the Bronze-winning Cadet Team.
All three boys turned in their terrific efforts at Nationals following their participation in the World Karate Federation World Cup last month in Croatia.
The World Championships will be held in Jakarta, Indonesia in November. They are held biannually and include Cadet, Junior and Under 21 categories of competition.
In other athlete news, Cyclist Elizabeth Nuspan has been selected into the Victorian State Team for the National Junior Road Championships. Elizabeth’s selection followed consistent performances across the three major Junior Tour events and the State Championships held this winter. She is one of three girls selected in the Under 15 team. Fellow WestVic Cycling Program athlete Sam Warren, who won the Australian Mountain Climb championship earlier this winter, will compete at the Nationals as an independent.
All athletes supported through the Bacchus Marsh Grammar and Cycling programs at WestVic Academy of Sport have access to support services such as strength and conditioning programming and coaching, musculoskeletal screening, sport psychology, nutrition and other personal development.
