Irwin is in terrific form, having won 4 Gold medals at the recent Australian Gymnastics Championships in May. Irwin was the standout winner in the All Round competition, and Individual Apparatus competitions for Pommel, Rings and the High Bar. He will take this form into this weekend’s competition, and will be competing purely for himself, with no team competition. Irwin will compete on all apparatus throughout the competition, and will be looking to go one better than his runner up place in 2014.
Fellow superstars, Karate talents Max Noble and Ben DeBortoli, both from the Bacchus Marsh Grammar: Elite Sport Program - were the recipients of the Cadet/Junior “Top Gun” award and “Bruce Hyland” award and scholarship respectively at the Karate Victoria Presentation Day. These are two of the three biggest awards given in Victorian Junior Karate.
Following on from Irwin, Noble and DeBortoli’s achievements, the following Academy athletes have achieved the following results in the past week, or have upcoming tournaments.
Hockey star Max Ferrier will this weekend compete in the 2015 Hockey Victoria Country Championships. Playing for the Warrnambool side, Ferrier will compete in shortened time version matches, to allow for multiple matches per day. All Men’s matches will be played at the Footscray Hockey Centre in Spotswood.
Rower, Narelle Burnside competed in the Australian Masters Rowing Championships in Sydney from 27 – 31 May. Competing in the Mixed Masters events, Burnside placed 8th in the C 2x event, and 7th in the D 4x event.
Ararat shooter Tom Pilgrim competed at the “Commonwealth Trap Carnival” at the State Trap Centre in Echuca. Pilgrim competed in six events across Single Barrel, Double Barrel and Points Score; culminating in the "Commonwealth Champion of Champions" - a 75 target event held off 18m.
Basketballer Chloe Bibby was at a National Training Camp, vying for selection in the National Under 19 side – the “Gems”. She had a good camp, and showed her talents throughout the week, however was unsuccessful in making the team. There will be another opportunity for selection in 2016 as she is still eligible for this age group.
