Shaun has been invited into the “2015 National Children’s Squad” to compete for the 2016 season. This selection comes on the back of Shaun’s terrific local season this past winter; where Shaun finished 3rd overall in his age group 2000 U/16 SSA Australian Championships.
As a national children’s squad member, Shaun now has complete access to all Australian team projects and resources. Most excitingly, Shaun is eligible to compete for Australia in the FIS children’s series during the 2015-2016 Northern Hemisphere season.
WestVic Academy of Sport Executive Officer Rob Ward congratulated Shaun, adding that “he’s worked really hard to achieve this milestone. He travels to Europe for training, and does lots of work on his fitness locally also. It is a big commitment for Shaun and his parents Duane and Jenny; and we’re proud to work with them”. FedUni WestVic Academy of Sport has supported Shaun in 2015 via provision of weekly Strength and Conditioning sessions and Sport Psychology.
The other seven athletes to have been selected for Australia who are supported by WestVic are: Julia Bourke (Shot Put), Joel Hennessy, Max Noble and Ben DeBortoli (Karate), Rory Carroll (Table Tennis). Hudson Irwin (Gymnastics) and Max Ferrier (Hockey).
In other athlete news, Special Olympics Equestrians athletes Marion McKenzie and David Rak this week take on the Riding for the Disabled National Championships in Werribee. Both will represent as part of the Victorian Team, and compete in events: dressage (including a freestyle event), show jumping and working trails. David will compete in all events, while Marion will complete at least the dressage and show jumping. Both athletes are supported by WestVic via weekly Strength and Conditioning sessions.
FedUni WestVic Academy of Sport currently supports 102 athletes across 24 sports. Hudson becomes the sixth athlete supported by to compete in an International competition in 2015. Additionally, there are 50 athletes who have competed in National competition in the past 12 months.
