Josh won 4 singles games on the Saturday; then Sunday along with previous Westvic member Jack Donald in U17 boys doubles, won their group of 4 pairs to make the Semi-Final. The boys played very well & fought hard to go down to the number #1 seed, who went on to win the title. Dan won six of his nine matches across singles and doubles.
As members of the WestVic Academy of Sport Cason Sports Badminton Program, both athletes, along with their fellow squad members, gain access to weekly coaching from former Olympic and Commonwealth Games representatives Rhonda Cator and Andrew Perks. Regular strength and conditioning coaching is provided to all athletes, as well as access to Nutritional information, Sports Psychology relevant to their sport, as well as biomechanical filming in order for them to view their stroke technique.
In other WestVic Academy of Sport news, the organisation held its Annual General Meeting tonight; and toasted marvellous year which saw 115 athletes across 24 sports supported, with a record 47 of those athletes competing at National level or International level. Further, the Academy delivered an estimated 800 services and activities to its athletes; including specialist coaching, strength and conditioning training, sport science testing and analysis, sport psychology, nutrition advice, media skills coaching, small group sessions with Ballarat Olympians, job search and interview support and advocacy to state and national bodies.
The Board was confirmed as unchanged from 2014/2015; with Chris Gleeson remaining as Chair, Tavis Baker as Deputy and John Abraham, Craig Wilding, Rhonda Cator and Gav McGrath rounding out the team. The Board is well-supported by a large network of business people and community leaders; who provide their expertise to strategic projects.
Academy Executive Officer Rob Ward described the year as a golden on all fronts; “We have a terrific athlete cohort who have achieved so many great results this year – it is pleasing to be part of their journey along their pathway. It is also exciting we are supported by such a great Board and Friends of the Board; they help progress and set up the business so we can deliver the services the athletes needs to achieve what they have”.
