Held at the Queensland Sport and Athletics Centre, in Brisbane Queensland, Werner will be competing at the Nationals for the first time in the Open event after smashing her personal best distance by 1.42m to achieve a 43.15m throw.
The qualifying distance for the Open event is 42.00m, a distance Werner had not yet reached, however at last weekend’s Athletics Victoria “Zone finals”, she easily passed this distance on her first attempt.
This is not Werner’s first time at the Nationals, however is her first time as an Open age athlete, she has previously competed in the Open competition as an Under 23 age group athlete.
Werner is an Individual Member with the Academy, and as a result has access to individual Strength and Conditioning coaching; biomechanical filming; a musculoskeletal screening and personalised strength program and Psychology workshops throughout the year.
Werner will join fellow Academy athlete Julia Bourke at the National Championships, after Bourke won the Under 18 Shot Put at the Junior State Championships on Saturday 14 February. In winning this title, she set a State record with her distance of 14.95m.
Bourke is a member of the Bacchus Marsh Grammar Elite Sport Program with the Academy, and receives a musculoskeletal screening and personalised strength program; access to Nutritional advice; and various off surface benefits that aide her in her sporting pursuits.
Academy Manager of Sport Programs Kelly Dunn congratulated both ladies on the achievements, “We are very proud of Emma and Julia, and can see their hard work in the gym and towards their overall athletic development has paid off with these outstanding results. We’re looking forward to following their pursuits on the Gold Coast in the coming weeks.”
Both Emma and Julia will take on this weekend’s Open State Championships, held at Lakeside Stadium. Also this weekend, Academy Martial Arts athletes Joel Hennessy, Max Noble and Ben DeBortoli will compete in their State Championships; which is the first major event of the season.
