On the International stage, Badminton Boys Daniel Hocking and Josh Gay each competed in Singles, Doubles (teaming together) and Mixed Doubles at the Li-Ning Australian Junior International, in Altona, Melbourne. The doubles match saw the boys go down in a tough three-setter; while Daniel made the second round of the Mixed Doubles; the same pair (a seeded pair) defeating both Daniel and Josh.
At National level, WestVic-supported Cyclists competed in Under 17s at the National Junior Road Cycling Championships. Jesse Norton was 6th overall in the Individual Time Trial; 12th in Road Race and 11th in Criterium. Elizabeth was 19th in the Road Race.
Go-Karter Joe Fawcett also competed at National level; the last round of the Australian Go-Karting Championships, held at Melbourne’s Todd Road Go-Kart Centre. In a field of 36 racers, Joe completed the four heats in an average of 14th spot to start the final there. In a mixed-weather final, Joe survived a first corner pile-up to recover, pass 27 racers in 16 laps to take 9th.
At State Level, Ruby De Ruiter qualified for National Championships later this year, following a solid outing in her new division (Black Belt – Taekwondo’s highest division) at the State Taekwondo Championships at the weekend. Meanwhile, Skateboarder Brad Saunders continued his build-up to the Tampa DamAm later this year, trialling new tricks while taking out the Taylors Hill round of the Victorian Skate League.
Also at State level, our Swimmers had the Victorian Age Shortcourse Championships at MSAC, highlighted by Ben Grima making the final of 13y.o. Boys 100m Free, Back and Butterfly plus 200 Medley. Fellow WestVic-supported athletes Elle Hennig, Josh Stahl, Mekaylah Kuchel, Abbey Peirce also took part.
WestVic supports 143 athletes across 23 sports; all of whom access services in: specialist coaching; weekly strength and conditioning; sport science opportunities; sport psychology, nutrition and other personal development; plus athlete mentoring. In 2016, 52 athletes supported by WestVic competed at National level or equivalent.
